How do I limit the visitor path length?

Look and behaviorUpdated 1 min read

Set Steps to show in Settings › Visitor path to any number from 1 to 10. Steps are counted back from the current page, so the most recent part of the shopper's route is kept.

What it is

When Visitor path is on, the breadcrumb is built from the pages a shopper clicked through. A long browsing session could produce a very long trail, so Steps to show caps how many steps of the route appear. You can choose any number from 1 to 10. Steps are counted back from the current page, so the trail always keeps the most recent part of the shopper's journey, which is the part that's most useful to step back through.

How to set it up

  1. Open Settings and use the theme picker in the header to choose your theme.

  2. Go to the Visitor path section.

  3. Make sure Build breadcrumbs from the visitor's path is on. Steps to show only applies when visitor path is enabled.

  4. Enter a number between 1 and 10 in Steps to show. If you type a number outside that range, it's adjusted to the nearest allowed value.

  5. Click Save in the save bar.

  6. Browse a few pages on your storefront and open a product to check that the trail length suits your design.

Why it's useful

A trail that shows every page someone visited quickly becomes noise, and on mobile it can take up far more space than it deserves. Limiting the steps keeps the breadcrumb short and focused on where the shopper came from most recently. That's usually all they need to get back to the list they were browsing. A setting of 2 to 4 suits most stores. Combined with the Long breadcrumbs setting, you get full control over how much room the trail takes, so it helps navigation without competing with your product content.
