How deep can I nest?

Category TreeUpdated 1 min read

Up to 10 levels deep, so the longest trail is Home, ten categories, then the product. Most stores work best with three to five levels.

What it is

You can nest collections up to 10 levels deep in the category tree. Each level adds one step to the breadcrumb, so the deepest possible trail is Home followed by ten categories, then the product. That's plenty for almost any catalog, from a simple boutique with two levels to a large store with detailed departments like Home › Hardware › Tools › Power tools › Drills › Cordless drills.

How to set it up

  1. Open Tree editor.

  2. Drag a collection and drop it onto another collection to nest it one level deeper.

  3. Repeat to build deeper branches. The editor won't let you go past ten levels.

  4. Select the deepest collection in a branch to see its full trail in the storefront preview.

  5. If a trail looks too long, drag collections back up a level to flatten that branch.

  6. Click Save to publish your changes.

If you do use deep branches, go to Settings › Long breadcrumbs and choose how long trails behave on desktop and mobile. For example, they can collapse the middle or scroll sideways, so they always fit the screen.

Why it's useful

The ten-level limit gives large catalogs room to describe their structure accurately while keeping trails readable. Most stores work best with three to five levels: deep enough to guide shoppers, short enough to read at a glance. A good rule is to nest only where it helps someone choose. If every product in a branch would fit one broader category, a flatter tree is usually clearer. The limit also protects your storefront from runaway trails that would break your layout, especially on small phone screens.
